Preschool: Here She Comes!

Yesterday was Delaney's first day of school- ever. She has been ready for a long time and I have kept her home because I feel like there is such a short time that they get to be home before they go to school and since I stay home, I wanted her there with me.

At 6:40 am she was in my bed, grinning from ear to ear and asking if this was the day that she would stay and I would go. I smiled back, as much as I could, and said, "Yes, today is the day- you stay, I go". I had a hard time with that one, not gonna lie. We got out of bed, Brody was still snoozing so we had a nice quiet few minutes to start the day. I got their cups ready and poured my coffee in peace. Just as I turned on the shower, Brody wandered out of his room and sat on the couch to watch Curious George. I took a shower and got ready. The kids both had breakfast and Delaney was begging to get dressed, so while she did that, I wrestled clothes on Brody. I did her hair and she picked out a bow to wear and put her socks and shoes on without help and without being told. It's like she's in college.

When it was time to actually leave, she got her lunch box, put it in her back pack and waltzed right out to the car where she was forced to endure the inevitable first day picture. My plan was to have "Preschool"spelled out in chalk on the wall and she would stand next to it, but alas, that did not happen. Luckily, I printed this sign, just in case. The pictures were quick- mostly because the sun was bright and she "just can't take it" and because Brody kept photo bombing each picture as he rode by on his bike.

She's so cute!

I really don't know why she was leaning on the car.
She's a little excited.

We got in the car and I quickly rambled off every piece of advice I could think of. Make sure to use your manners, don't push, if someone is sad-try to cheer them up, make sure to wipe good, wash your hands, don't say shit or son of a bitch, wait your turn, don't kiss any one, don't talk to strangers, yes you can talk to kid strangers in your class, but not other strangers, raise your hand, push in your chair, if you fart say excuse me, don't eat your boogers, introduce yourself to people, shake hands, drink water, do your best, don't say I can't, I will be waiting for you when you get done, etc. It's only an 8 minute ride, but it was seriously as if I had never taught her anything.

We made it to the parking lot and I had a moment. Maybe she doesn't really need to go. Right?? I didn't turn off the car right away- which annoyed her to no end. When I finally did, she was itching to get out. I grabbed Brody's hand and watched Delaney walk right through the gate, all on her own. I signed her in, walked in while she unpacked her bag, hung it up like a pro and sat down criss cross applesauce, hands in her lap. That was it. She did wave and I might have yelled, "I love you munchie so much" as loud as I could before I picked Brody up and carried him out.

This one gets me.
Waiting to go in

God must have been watching because I didn't have a chance to be too sad- Brody was sad enough for the both of us. He pulled his hat down over his eyes so I couldn't see him crying. Then we got in the car and he kept turning around to look at Delaney's empty seat and kept asking,"Where Gawaney?" It was heartbreaking. We went home and played trains for awhile and then went to Target. The time went by so slowly. When I told Brody it was time to pick Delaney up, he was so excited! We went to school, signed her out and waited outside her classroom until the door opened and out walked a little line of preschoolers. My heart melted. She's so big. She had a great day. She sang us her welcome song and was completely dumbfounded that there were 2 Jacobs in the class.

I am happy to report that this morning, she was just as eager to go and Brody was a little less sad. There were still tears, but no dragging him away- he walked like a big boy. Lord help me the day that he starts. I am gonna need a drink that day!

Meet Your Teacher!

Preschool. How in the world is she old enough for preschool? I try to wrap my mind around how fast time goes and am baffled. I sat in bed the night before Meet Your Teacher morning and looked at a picture of me, holding a two week old Delaney, with my friends, Ami, Mary, and Anabelle. It seems like a couple months ago- not almost 5 years ago. As much as I didn't want her to go, I knew she needed to. I knew that it would be good for Brody as well. They are together 24/7- they are on top of each other all the time! Literally, Delaney's bed is above Brody's. They have been fighting a lot and I having a small break from each other was going to be worthwhile. What I did not expect was how upset Brody was going to get. Yesterday morning, the teachers invited us to bring the kids in to see their classroom and meet their teachers- we were to stay the whole time with our child (we could stay the whole time or ten minutes-didn't matter). Delaney was up and dressed by 7:00. She picked put the dress she wanted to wear and despite it being slightly scandalous with some cleavage showing, she wore it. My mom met us at Marshall Elementary (I went to the same school for preschool!) to pick up Brody while Delaney and I hung out in her class.

Delaney got out of the car and immediately Brody wanted to hug her and he told her that he didn't want her to go to school. It was heartbreaking. We assured him that he would see her again and persuaded him to get in Nana's car. When they left, it was time to go in!

Such a sad face. What's in the bag?? A bowling set. Don't ask.
My preschooler!
Can't get over how big she is!

Immediately we were greeted by Mrs. Mortenson. She welcomed Delaney in and told her to play with whatever she wanted. Of course, she chose a small Little People house and asked Mrs. Mortenson to play with her! They were so cute! She was having a ball!

Mrs. Mortenson and Delaney

She finished playing with the Little People House and while I chatted with her other teacher, Mrs. Alva, Delaney spied a huge dollhouse and camped out there most of the time.

Posing- no idea where she gets that.

Right before it was time to leave, she found the craft center- with scissors! We don't use the kid scissors too often around here- Edward Scissorhands  Brody can't so much be trusted just yet. Delaney was in heaven. While she was cutting, with her tongue concentration, I took some pictures of my little girl's cubby. She has a cubby! I swear- it was like I had never been in a classroom before (and I use to teach-Kindergarten!).

SO our time to hang out together in preschool came to an end. She gave her teachers hugs and we walked out. Her first classroom. That was a moment. I made her take a picture in front of the school sign and in the middle of it she said, "Okay, that's enough, let's go get my brother".
Man, talk about an emotional roller coaster. I don't think I can take all this! :)

Tomorrow's post? Her first day.

Reunions and Preschool

What a weekend! Eric had a reunion this weekend which we got to go to! It was a blast! It was held at a local resort and included a cocktail night and then the 'fancy' night. Friday my mom came over to watch the kids and we went to the cocktail party. It was fun to see all of the people Eric used to hang out with. Eric is 15 years older than I am so it's fun when people ask me when I graduated and I tell them 1998- a lot of the times, they don't really have too much to say:) The party ended early and we ended up at a little deli/bar that one of Eric's classmates owned. There were a ton of people! We went home that night to reprieve my mom for a bit and Saturday headed back up to the hotel at noon. We just hung out at the pool all day, talked with old friends and drank some beers. That night was the 'fancy' night- I seriously have no idea what it's actually called. Eric and I don't get dressed up too often so this was fun. There was dinner, dancing and a slide show that was hilarious! Seeing all these people with feathered hair and short shorts (the boys) and the girls with the high waisted jeans was fun!! So different from when I was in high school!
It was very sunny, lol. This was Friday night

Best guys around! Eric, Jeff, and Ronny

This was the fancy night!

The view from our room!

My mom stayed with the kids (thanks Mom!) so we picked them up around noon on Sunday, took them home, put them down for a nap, and relaxed a bit.

This week is a big one! Delaney starts preschool! We have been promising her a "special" day to go out and get her school stuff and today was that day!
It started off in Nana's car (which is always exciting) with me in the back seat with her! My grandma, Mimi, came with us too!
Cheesy smile

We went to good old Target to look for a back pack and unfortunately there was slim pickings. I realize we are a little late getting a backpack, but this is when we had time:( We quickly found a cute backpack and lunchbox that matches. I could not get over what we were doing. There she is, just picking out a backpack- not to load with crap and cart around the house, but to take to school! Unbelievable.

Nana showing her the one cute one left. Seriously, check out the bare bones behind them.
Love her. (Both of them actually)

She looks so big!

After we found her backpack, it was off to get some shoes and an outfit. She picked out some super cute pink and gray tennis shoes and then led the way to the clothes. She was so cute! We don't usually get to go shopping without Brody so this was special. She definitely has opinions now! My mom and I would hold up a shirt and she'd say, "Ummm, no thanks". Mimi picked out a super cute dress for her and Nana found some adorable outfits too!
Leading Mimi to the shoes
She liked this one.
Almost too big for this section....

We hurried back to my mom's for dinner (Eric and Brody were meeting us there) and Delaney really wanted to show P-Paw her new loot.
Showing P-Paw her new stuff.

I can't believe how big she is. I never understood why kids going to school was always such an emotional thing, but man, I get it. I get it big time. I don't really want her to go.
I am going to miss her so much.
But, that's okay, it's not about me, it's about her. It's about her growing up, becoming more independent, learning how to make friends (okay, she already does that), sitting at a table with kids her age, listening to someone other than Eric or me, and just about her becoming Delaney Grace Mikkelson and blossoming into what God wants her to be.
So I just have to let go.
She will nail it.

Bucket List 2012

Delaney is starting preschool in the fall. Okay, when I say fall, I mean middle of summer- August 6th, but it's still fall semester, right? She will be going Monday through Thursday, 8:30-11:00. I have mixed feelings about this. I know she will be fine. She is very social, super smart and ready. I, on the other hand, am not ready. I don't want her to be gone every morning. Our daily activities will suddenly not involve her anymore. It makes me sad. I know I'm being ridiculous, but it's HARD! I AM excited about chillin with Brody man. We never get to hang out, just the two of us. In celebration (I guess) of this being the 'last summer' before my big girl starts school, I decided to make a "Bucket List"; things I want us to accomplish before D Day. Nothing fancy, just some construction paper, some Sharpies and I was good to go.

I added a grown-up section because there are a few things we want to accomplish in addition to the fun family stuff. Plus, I left some room so we could add to it!

What's on your summer bucket list??

4 going on 16....

Anyone that had met my kids, know that they are not shy. They talk to anyone and everyone. Walking thorough Costco sometimes feels like we are in a parade because Delaney and Brody both say hello and wave to everyone they see. I am so happy that is their personality. I would hate for them to clam up anytime someone talks to them. Now don't get me wrong, Brody is a funny, funny little man, but Delaney has us belly laughing daily. Some of the things that come out of her mouth have us scratching our heads trying to figure out how she came up with it. Examples? Oh I am so glad you asked.

Lately looking through the Target toy catalog has been her fav past time. There is a battery operated car that she wants that is $149.00. I told her that is too much money and she would need to find something else that she loves. So, today we went to my parent's house so they could assess the tooth situation with Brody (another post) and this is how the conversation went:

Delaney:  "Granddaddy, I want this car that we can ride in that has two seats and a steering wheel but Mommy says it's too much money. Can you give her some money so she can go and buy it right now please?"

Seriously- how does she know to hit up Granddaddy already?

Later in the afternoon, she was still on this car thing. Eric was home and she was begging, like for real, begging for this thing. Here is the rest of the story:

Delaney: "Mommy, can we puleeeeezzzzzz go get this car?"
Me: "No. It costs too much money and you don't need it.
Delaney: "Maybe Santa will bring it to me. I want to tell Santa"
Me: "Well Santa will not be at the mall to meet the kids for a little while still."
Delaney: "Okay, well how bout Daddy puts on Santa clothes and you be Mrs Claus and I will sit on Daddy's lap cuz I am getting really tired of waiting for Santa at the North Pole"

AFTER a lot of laughing......

Delaney: "Well, maybe I can just build one. The workers can help me and I will do it all by myself. I will draw a smiley face on it with a pencil all by myself. Daddy, will you do it cuz Mommy won't let me have a pencil."

Like I predicted, Delaney wears her Rapunzel dress daily. It is already starting to tear. Kinda pisses me off, but oh well, what am I gonna do? Sew it? lol Anyways, she was jumping on the couch, which she knows she is not allowed to do and I tell her to stop.........

Me: "Delaney, seriously, knock it off or you will sit in time out"
Delaney: "Delaney's not here Rapunzel is."
Me: "Fine. Rapunzel STOP it now or you will go to time out"
Delaney: "Well. princesses don't go to time out and I don't remember seeing her go to time out on the TV."
Me: "Well, Rapunzel, Mother says stop it now or....'
Delaney: "You'll cut my hair? Not nice Mother. I am going back to Delaney."

And that folks, is just today. She is witty and smart and we are screwed.

The birthday continues......

Delaney's birthday party was on Sunday, but her actual birthday was the following Thursday. We have made it a tradition to put a bunch of balloons all over the kids rooms while they are sleeping so when they wake up they have a happy moment! Delaney did not disappoint with her reaction. She immediately wanted to know who put them in her room and when I told her that Daddy had done it, she dramatically yelled, "Daddy is my best hero ever!"

We quickly got dressed and out the door for our busy day. Our first stop was to see their friend Braydon. Braydon is only one day older than Delaney so they were both confused when they gave each other a gift. It is hilarious listening to them communicate.

Playing in the fort

Still can't believe she is four

Braydon

Braydon pushing Delaney.... so cute!

He looks so big!

After we left Braydon's house we went and picked up my mom and headed to Little Anthony's for lunch! Eric was supposed to be working and told us he couldn't come, but surprised us by showing up and he brought Delaney a bouquet of flowers. Her expression was priceless! She got a delicious ice cream sundae after lunch and we went made the trip home for a nice long nap and finished the day off with spaghetti (her favorite) and then had a calorie free (whatever) Oreo ice cream cake.

It was very sunny....

The day after her birthday, she came stumbling down the stairs in the morning, still half asleep, looked up at me and said, "Mommy, am I still 4?" I said, "Yes babe, you will be four for a whole year."
She says back, "Oh good, thanks Mommy, I am not ready to be five yet."

(I am not ready for that either...)
